Establishing a village on the San Diego river, the original inhabitants of Santee were the Kumeyaay Indians. A woman named Jennie Blodgett was the wife of one of the area’s pioneers. She later married second husband Milton Santee, and it was after him that the city got its name.
Located only eighteen miles from the Pacific Ocean, the suburban city of Santee sits in San Diego County and is part of the East County region of California.
There are numerous attractions in Santee, most involving outdoor activities such as golf, camping, fishing and bird-watching. Santee Boulder is a recreational rock climbing area in the northern section the city and attracts many mountain bikers. The city also hosts rock climbing competitions at Santee Boulders. Also of interest are free music concerts that are put on every summer and run for 10 weeks. Then in the fall the Santee Wine & Bluegrass Festival is hosted by the community, and attracts large crowds.
